History and Development of SAMBO in Indonesia

SAMBO was first introduced to Indonesia in 2007. In its early stages, the sport faced limited recognition due to low public awareness and minimal promotion. However, through perseverance and consistent efforts, SAMBO gradually gained traction and began establishing its foundation in the country.

In 2014, the Indonesian SAMBO Federation (PP PERSAMBI) was formally restructured, gaining national and international recognition. Since 2017, under the leadership of Krisna Bayu, OLY, a three-time Judo Olympian, and Arnold Silalahi, a FIAS-certified coach, SAMBO has grown rapidly across the country.

Today, the sport is represented in 32 of Indonesia’s 38 provinces, supported by more than 60 national-level coaches (including two FIAS-certified), two international referees (Category A), six regional referees (Category C), and over 60 national referees. With nearly 1,000 active athletes and steady growth each year, SAMBO has established a solid foundation and a promising future in Indonesia.

Milestones and Achievements

The Indonesian athletes have been successfully winning medals at the Southeast Asia Championship, Asian Championship, and World Championship as they have been given structured training, certified coaching, referee development and international exposure.

Looking Ahead

PP PERSAMBI is committed to increasing grassroots participation, strengthening coaching and referee education, and building partnerships worldwide. With strong leadership and interest from the nation, SAMBO in Indonesia will achieve more in the future years to come.
